New local support group for the transgender and non-binary community and their families

Jane Taylor (Physical Health & Inequalities Lead Manager at SWYPT) asked us to share this message with all:
We have been successful in securing funding from the Suicide Prevention Innovation fund from Public Health. The vision is to create a safe and supportive environment for people who identify as trans or non-binary. We have started a weekly support group specifically focussing on social, emotional, and practical support for people and their families.
In England, 48% of transgender young people had attempted suicide at least once in their lives (Nuno et al., 2015). Whilst the LGBTQI+ community exists with plentiful support groups across the country, there is NO local provision for this particular group of people explicitly in the Barnsley Borough. We are aiming the service at 16+ due to the large percentage of 16-18-year-olds (34%) who have been considered to have attempted suicide (source SHSC Liaison Psychiatry team).
Also, I have attached the link to our website (see link below) which has some information on…….as you can appreciate we’ve only just started, so we’ve got a long way to go. We are hoping people will want to share their stories, so we can share testimonies on our social media pages.
