Support for patients living with cancer

Posted on:

Following a grant from the South Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, Barnsley Hospice has developed a selection of videos demonstrating mindfulness and relaxation techniques to support patients living with cancer.

What are the videos?

The videos, featuring qualified members of our hospice team, are approximately five minutes long and cover the following techniques:

· Body Scan

· Guided Visualisation

· Qi Gong

· Tai Chi

How do they support patients?

The techniques will complement existing treatment pathways, reduce habitual behaviours and increase self-awareness and self-care. They also help to focus on the inner body to regulate the mind, breath and body movement. All videos and techniques are applicable at all stages in the cancer pathway. Each video page has some basic information about what the technique is, how it helps and how often it should be done.

A patient who has been supported through mindfulness techniques at the hospice shared the following:

“I have always been terrified of MRI scans because of claustrophobia, as soon as I received a date for a scan the anxiety would start. I now practice the skills and can undergo scans with much less terror. I can feel my heart rate decrease and in my last scan I almost fell asleep!”

How to access the videos?

To help us gain a better understanding of where patients are accessing the videos from and how they are being supported by the techniques, we kindly ask that they complete the short survey form linked below the videos.
